Description

An impressive Victorian oil painting showing a group of children playing, the boy to the far left mischievously pulling on his playmate's hair.

Despite being unsigned this artwork was clearly painted by a professional artist. This is displayed through the use of delicate brushstrokes to the children's facial features and the confident compositional choices made by the artist.

The chocolate-box style, popular throughout the 19th Century was obviously favoured by this artist. The subtle details create a thoughtful and well-rounded narrative scene for the viewer. This technique was popular with Victorian painters who enjoyed including symbolism and literary references within their compositions.

Impressively presented in an ornate Rococo style swept frame with floral corner pieces.

Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

There is craquelure visible across the artwork and two minor losses to the paint, one to the upper edge, the other to the lower left corner.
