Description
Jesus stands in his mother's lap as they both hold an apple, symbolising his role as redeemer of original sin. Peculiarly, Jesus is depicted with six toes - a feature typically associated with St. Joseph to represent the heavy burden of responsibility he assumed in protecting Mary and the infant Jesus, as an extra toe would provide additional stability to carry a heavy burden. Perhaps, then, Jesus' extra digit represents his connection to Joseph, or signifies his own immense responsibility. Well presented in a vintage wooden frame with gold and red trim. Unsigned. On board.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, surface dirt, and craquelure. Areas of overpainting. Wear to the frame leaves it with a distressed finish.
