A superb late 19th century Continental school portrait painted on panel. The artist has masterfully captured the sitter's character. She wears a modest dress and cap, which frames her lined, sun worn face. In this way the artist tells us the story of her long, hard life - she may be a peasant who has worked in the fields all her life. The portrait is excellently presented in a solid wood carved frame. Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface dirt as shown. This would be resolves with surface cleaning and re-varnishing. Inspection under UV light shows small, scattered retouching. The frame has some wear and small losses to the gilding. Overall the appearance is very good.
