A wonderful 19th-century genre scene depicting two young ladies pursuing the attention of a handsome young gentleman resting on a wooden bench outside a stone cottage. The two ladies can be seen attempting to tickle the peaceful gentleman with a long strand of straw, millimetres away from his nostril. The charming work has been beautifully presented in an antique 19th-century gilt frame with a vine and berry running pattern. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been fully relined to the reverse. Inspection under UV light reveals minor areas of restoration and overpainting. Small moulding losses and minor wear to the antique gilt frame. Stable cracking visible on all members.
