Henri Marcette - 19th Century Oil Repairing the Old Mill
Description
Two labourers clear the overgrown moss and grass from the roof of an old stone mill in this charming rural scene by Belgian artist Henri Marcette (1824–1890). The work is signed to the lower left and is well presented in a maple veneer frame with a plaque affixed to the lower edge. On canvas.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and areas of craquelure. Three canvas tear repairs, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Dent near the centre of the canvas where a tear has been repaired. Faint impressions from the stretchers. Light wear to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
