Description

A classical Victorian era portrait by Adrien Wulffaert (1804-1873), depicting a lady in mourning seated in an interior before an Italianate landscape. The sitter is dressed in elegant black attire with lace bonnet, collar and shawl. Well presented in a swept gilt frame with shell and acanthus ornamentation. Signed and dated 1849 to the lower left. On canvas.

Condition

The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been previously relined. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. Small surface marks/ abrasions are present. The frame has minor surface wear.

Artist Biography

Belgian painter of Genre & portraits, who travelled widely around Europe. He was born September 1804, in Coes, and studied at the art school in Bruges. He was the husband of Clara Wulffaert. He died at the end of February 1873, in Ghent.
