Description
Hugh Latimer (c.1487-1555) was an English Protestant preacher. He was Bishop of Worcester during the Reformation and Church of England chaplain to King Edward VI, but was arrested on charges of treason and burned when the Catholic Mary I ascended to the throne, becoming one of the three Oxford Martyrs of Anglicanism. He is depicted here in miniature, wearing a black cassock and gold crucifix. Beautifully presented in an antique gilt frame. Indistinctly inscribed verso. Unsigned. On card.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and craquelure. Areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
