A dramatic and finely detailed 19th Century river landscape view, centrally composed with wild foliage and trees. The artist has impressively depicted the reflection of the surface of the river, corresponding with the sky, and balancing the overall composition. Fine detail has been built up, adding depth and an encapsulating perspective. Handsomely presented in a gilt wooden frame, with running patterns of scrolling acanthus, bead and reel, and floral motifs, as shown. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
In very good condition overall for a picture of this age. There is some craquelure to the surface, and some discolouration. There is also some creasing due to the stretchers behind the canvas, normal for a picture of this age. Inspection under UV light reveals some restoration. There are some small losses and scuffing to the corners of the frame.
