An amusing nineteenth-century genre scene depicting two men playing cards in a dimly lit tavern. The artist captures their animated expressions with remarkable character and detail: one man grins gleefully as he reveals his cards to the viewer, whilst the other frowns as he examines his unfortunate hand. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and overpainting. Discolouration and areas of craquelure. Scratch to the lefthand side. Scuffing and some stable cracking to the frame.
