A beautiful 18th century oil composition depicting the Baptism of Christ, a classic subject in Christian art. The scene shows Jesus bowing with his hands clasped in a gesture of reverence. John the Baptist is seen pouring water over Christ's head, whilst a white dove represents the Holy Spirit descending, set within a naturalistic backdrop of trees. The painting is well presented in a swept gilt-effect frame with corner and centre ornaments. Unsigned. On canvas laid down.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Various light scratches and abrasions. Historic craquelure to the surface. Discolouration to the varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of retouching. The overall condition of the work is good.
