A very fine and emotive portrait in watercolour with later pastel details, depicting Harriet Nicholas (1793-1850), fourth daughter of Robert Nicholas, MP for Cricklade, Wiltshire, England. The artist has produced a most alluring character study, with delicate and refined form. The sitter gazes directly at the viewer, with a sense of calm and patience. Dressed in a brightly coloured shawl with embroidery details and a black lace veil, the subject is likely depicted in a later stage of mourning.
The artist demonstrates remarkable technique in watercolour, depicting the gentle subtleties of facial form in an adept manner. We believe another hand has added pastel details at a later date, tastefully embellishing the overall composition.
Well-presented in a blue silk double mount and thin gilt wooden rounded frame, as shown. There is a substantial handwritten inscription to the reverse, detailing much family history of the Nicholas, Trollope and Giffard descendants of the sitter.
Unsigned and inscribed. On wove.In very good condition for a picture of this age. There is some minor even surface discolouration. The frame has some minor marks and scuffing, mainly to the corners.
