Brixton born Gertrude Demain Hammond was a British painter and children’s book illustrator. She studied at the Lambeth School of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools before embarking on a, self-supporting, career as an illustrator. She contributed to a variety of London journals such as The Yellow Book, and illustrated literary works including those of Edmund Spenser, Shakespeare and Charles Dickens. Her paintings, influenced in style by the Pre-Raphaelites, are mostly in watercolours of literary subjects, portraits, and interior genre scenes. She exhibited at the Royal Academy (8) and frequently at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (elected 1896).
