A small boat rests at the water's edge whilst a flock of birds forms silhouettes against the evening sky. Ernest William Haslehurst (1866-1949) was best known for his railway poster designs. Like his posters, this scene presents an idyllic vision of the English countryside. Signed and dated in the lower left. Beautifully presented in a vintage gilt frame. On paper.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration and foxing. Marks and scuffs to the frame. Some debris caught under the glass.

Artist Biography

Ernest William Haslehurst (1866-1949) was a painter and illustrator born in Walthamstow, London. He studied at the Slade School. Predominantly a watercolour and landscape painter, he exhibited widely and is best remembered for his illustrations for the Beautiful Britain series of books and designs for London North Eastern Railway and London, Midland and Scottish Railway posters. His art was featured in many magazines of the day including the Illustrated London News and Tatler. Haslehurst exhibited at the Imperial Arts League, Royal Academy, and Royal Society of British Artists. He was elected as a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1924. Examples of his work are held by Bristol Art Gallery, Newport Art Gallery, National Railway Museum, and Sheffield Art Gallery, among others.
