A truly beautiful, late 19th Century portrait of a young Victorian woman, in half mourning attire. The lady wears a black dress with white cuffs, delicately coloured lace scarf and a pretty floral enamel brooch. She also sports a gold mourning ring on each hand.
The Victorian language of flowers has been used here to wonderfully subtle effect. The sitter holds a white flower, possibly a Lisianthus, which represents appreciation, gratitude and charisma. With this flower you say ‘thank you’ to the deceased. The brooch at her neck has delicate forget-me-nots which in turn represent your relationships and promises the other person that you will never forget them in your thoughts. The rosiness of her cheeks and the flicker of a smile playing at her lips, indicate that she is coming to the end of her mourning period.
Her hair and attire would suggest this painting dates to the 1860s. It is unsigned and presented in a handsome contemporary frame with undulating scored cove and beaded strap work.
On canvas.The painting has been relined and there is some craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration. There is some bitumen deterioration in the darker areas of her dress. The frame is in fine condition.
