This meticulously detailed heraldic study in pen and watercolour depicts the coat of arms of the Howard family, headed by the Duke of Norfolk. The arms comprise a gules shield bearing a 'bend' design surrounded by six cross-crosslets. Within the bend is a smaller shield representing the Flodden Augmentation of Honour, a special heraldic addition granted by King Henry VIII to Thomas Howard in recognition of his decisive English victory over the Scots at the Battle of Flodden. The crest features a statant crowned lion atop a 'cap of maintenance,' known in heraldic language as a 'chapeau gules turned up ermine.' Unsigned. On paper.

Slight discolouration and light foxing to the paper. Small strips of tape in each corner. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
