A fine and unusual early 19th century oil on panel in tondo depicting a female archangel, possibly Jophiel (variously spelt Zophiel), one of the only archangels often depicted as female. With a heavenly presence, the archangel is seen floating, pointing upwards in a gesture to the heavens.
The figure is dressed in a loose empire line dress of the period with floating swag, posed in a rather Mannerist style. The poem 'Zophiel' by Maria Gowen Brooks was published in London in 1831 and was a popular subject in the early 19th century. Unsigned.
On panel.The condition is typical for a picture of this age. There is some historic bitumen deterioration to the background. Some light surface discolouration and a small hole through the panel above the figure. Inspection under UV light reveals some surface restoration.
