Description
A remarkable copy after 'The Visitation', an altarpiece by Federico Barocci (1535-1612) for Santa Maria in Vallicella (Chiesa Nuova), Rome. The steps in the foreground lead up to the central figures, drawing the viewer into the composition. The Virgin Mary, pregnant with the baby Jesus, greets her cousin Elizabeth, who is herself pregnant with John the Baptist. Presented in a black and red frame with gilt edges. Unsigned. On card.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and some faint scratches to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting.
