A finely painted nineteenth century portrait of a lady wearing a lace bonnet, green dress, and gold heart-shaped necklace. A handwritten German label affixed to the reverse identifies the sitter as Katharina Arnold, née Billhofer (1794-1859), wife of Daniel Andreas Arnold. The label is signed by Eugen Arnold, Katharina and Daniel's great-grandson. The work is beautifully presented in a gilt frame adorned with ornate floral motifs. Unsigned. On canvas laid to board.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration, areas of blanching, and craquelure. The canvas has been laid to board, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. There is wear to the frame, including scuffs and stable cracking. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
