A fine example of a romantic genre painting by François Etienne Musin (1820-1888). This rural scene depicts gentlemen fishing by a riverbank beneath dramatic, billowing clouds that dominate the sky. Warm chiaroscuro lighting illuminates the sandy stone escarpment and windswept tree, contrasting beautifully with the moody, dark water and shadowed foreground. A peasant woman with a child is pictured on the right, returning home. The work is well presented in an ornate gilt frame with elaborate shell and acanthus ornamentation. Signed lower right and dated 1840. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Minor abrasions noted across the surface of the painting. Fine craquelure is observed throughout. Examination under UV light reveals discrete areas of retouching. Light canvas creasing present in the upper left quadrant. The gilt frame displays wear in keeping with age, including several moulding repairs and minor losses to the profile. Signs of historic woodworm present to the reserve, fully treated and pest-free. Overall, the artwork presents in good condition.
