Cuzco School 19th Century Oil - Madonna & Child
Description
A finely painted and highly symbolic 19th-century Cuzco School portrait of the Madonna and Child. The artist has captured both figures in richly decorated robes, adorned with intricate gilt patterns, while a halo-like radiance surrounds the Madonna and her crown. Young Christ can be seen in a tender embrace, holding a rose in one hand, symbolising Mary's purity and innocence lost through original sin. The religious portrait has been well presented in a large gilt-effect frame with bead course to the inner window, a fluted cove and acanthus mouldings to the outer profile. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of previous restoration carried out on the painting. The canvas has been extended by an inch at the top and sides with retouching to the crown and background. The canvas has been fully relined to the reverse. Historic craquelure and rubbing visible to the surface. The modern gilt-effect frame is in very good condition.
