A finely detailed engraving depicting Princess Jakobea of Baden (1558–1597) by the Dutch artist Crispijn van de Passe the Elder (1564–1637). Jakobea married Duke John William of Jülich-Cleves-Berg (1562–1609), who was considered mentally unstable. When her husband inherited his title, Jakobea ruled on his behalf as he had been imprisoned for his temper. She never conceived and was eventually arrested for allegedly conducting a relationship with the younger Dietrich von Hall zu Ophoven. She was later found dead in her room, having been suffocated or strangled. The motive for her murder appears to have been to clear the way for a more fertile wife who might save the endangered dynasty. The work is well presented in a simple card mount.
The Latin inscription beneath the image reads:
"Jakobea, sprung from the exalted princes of Baden,
once first wife of the Duke of Cleves.
If you regard her beauty – and all the rest – you would say: 'A true woman!'
Indeed she was worthy of a better fate than this." On paper.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discoloration and foxing to the paper. Some light wear to the mount. The artwork is in good condition for its age overall.
