Clare Winsten was born Clara Birnberg in Romania in 1894, but emigrated to England with her parents in 1902, working as an artist at a time when women were not considered serious contenders in the art world. She trained at the Slade School of Art and rose to prominence as part of the circle of Jewish Modernist painters that included Mark Gertler, David Bomberg and Isaac Rosenberg. Winsten soon became the only female member of their Whitechapel Boys group of artists and poets, and was the only female exhibitor at the (1914) post-Impressionist exhibition Twentieth Century Art: A Review of Modern Movements at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in which this group played a major part. Among her sculptures are examples in Toynbee Hall, Whitechapel, and in the garden of George Bernard Shaw's house, Hertfordshire. She also produced portraits of a number of prominent figures including George Shaw, Dmitri Shostakovich, Benjamin Britten and Mahatma Gandhi.
