Description
A striking three-quarter length portrait of a respectable middle-class woman in a formal black ensemble with white silk gloves and a decorative silver brooch at her collar, complete with milliner's hat. Cauwenberghe captures his sitter's direct, composed gaze and refined posture, with dignity and poise. The lady's black outfit is finely cut with several high-quality jewellery pieces pulling the whole look together. Cauwenberghe offers a looser, sketch-like quality in parts of the painting, inspired by the early Impressionist movement. Well presented in a modern gilt effect frame. The painting is signed to the lower right and dated '39. On canvas.Condition
Some light marks and minor abrasions to the lower third. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The overall condition of the artwork is very good for a painting of this age.
