An interesting portrait of Cecil Hill Burton (1788-1813). The artist Clara Burton (and possible relative) has taken inspiration from the original portrait by the noted artist Benjamin West PRA (1738-1820). Although West is best known for his historical compositions, he painted many portraits to subsidize his London lifestyle.
This particular portrait captures the young Cecil Burton dressed in a fine white gown and blue ribbon with long brown hair. The artist has captured a sensitive and lifelike portrayal of the young boy. Cecil Burton was the son of James Burton, the English priest. Cecil died in India aged 25 while serving as a British army officer. Inscribed on the reverse of the canvas 'Portrait of Cecil Hill Burton. Born 1788. Died 1813. Copied by Clara Burton from the original oil painting by Benjamin West PRA.'
Signed. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and various surface marks. Inspection under UV light shows areas of restoration, most noticeably to the centre of the canvas, to the right of the face and near the check area. A 11cm tear has been overpainted and joined together. This restoration work is also visible to the reverse of the canvas. With some overpainting to the raised arm. Various flecks of paint loss and wear.
