Artist Biography

Charles Samuel Keene (1823-1891) was a British watercolourist, engraver, draughtsman, and caricaturist. One of the prominent artists of his time, Keene holds a place equal to Daumier in France. After working with a lawyer and an architect, he was placed as a pupil with the well-known Whymper brothers, engravers.

Keene's first illustrations were for 'Robinson Crusoe' and 'The Adventures of Dick Boldhero in search of his Uncle'. He also collaborated on an amusing work entitled 'Book of Beauty'. In 1851, he began working for Punch with a satirical drawing of Louis Bonaparte. However, it was not until 1860 that he was assigned a preeminent position on the magazine. Keene's wit and concern with his art led to his producing types which quickly became popular. He gave life to a series of picturesque London figures and placed them in superbly drawn settings around the city. He exhibited his work in Paris in 1890 and won a gold medal. Works by Keene are in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery and Tate.
