Artist Biography
Hermann Struck (1876-1944) was a German-Jewish etcher, born in Berlin. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and published "Die Kunst des Radierens" ("The Art of Etching") in 1908, which became a seminal work on the subject. Struck's students included Marc Chagall, Lovis Corinth, Jacob Steinhardt, Lesser Ury, and Max Liebermann. After completing his studies in 1899, he was barred from teaching at the Academy because he was Jewish. A committed Zionist and Jewish activist, Struck first visited the Land of Israel in 1903, then under Ottoman rule. He exhibited his work at the Fifth Zionist Congress and was among the founders of the Mizrachi Religious Zionist movement. During the First World War, he served in the German army and was awarded the Iron Cross, First Class, for bravery. In 1922, Struck emigrated to Palestine, where he taught at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design and contributed to the establishment of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. He died in Haifa, Mandatory Palestine in 1944.
