A superb watercolour with body colour, depicting a monk playing music to an elderly figure in a stone wall interior. There is an atmospheric quality to the scene with an expressive attention to detail which is typical of Cattermole's work. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and some mount burn.

Artist Biography
Charles Cattermole was born in 1832, nephew of renowned artist George Cattermole. He painted historical subjects in a style similar to his uncle and exhibited mainly at the New Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of British Artists. Also exhibited at the Royal Academy and British Institution. He was also an elected associate of the Royal Institute in 1864 and a member from 1870.
