This delightful watercolour by Henry Benjamin Roberts RBA (1832-1915) depicts a young boy play his penny whilst to a tuneful canary. Wooden furniture, a large key and glassware complete the interior, all carefully depicted in a realistic manner by Roberts. The painting has been smartly mounted in a gilt-effect frame. Signed to the lower left. Indistinctly dated. On paper.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the watercolour and double card mount.

Artist Biography
Liverpool born painter of genre and bucolic scenes. Roberts was the son of a house painter and worked with his father before attending the Liverpool Academy in the days when they gave tuition. He is recorded as having exhibited at the British Institution, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Roberts was elected a member of the RI in 1870 but resigned in 1884. Between 1869 and 1877, he also contributed to magazines, including The Illustrated London News. An example of his work is the collection of the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
