Description
A lively river scene by French artist Charles Bouchez (1811–1882), with fine brushwork and animated figures. The scene depicts a long raft upon which a fire and shelter have been constructed. A team of six men man the rudders to guide it downstream. Large rafts such as this were traditionally used to transport timber from the Burgundy region to Paris to be sold as firewood before the expansion of the railway. Signed and dated lower right. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure throughout. The canvas has been relined, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Wear around the edges of the canvas. The artwork is in good condition for its age.
