Description

A humorous illustration showing the matrimonial ladder with a word at each rung. The ascent, surrounded by pretty roses and violets (both flowers associated with love) is the positive attributes of courtship leading to marriage at the top. The descent is the negative descent towards divorce, the rungs ending in a thorny thistle bush. This is an interpretation of the political pamphlet with wood engraved illustrations by George Cruickshanks, published after the opening of the “trial'” of Queen Caroline on 17 August 1820. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and dirtying to the surface.
