Description

This dramatic late 17th-century depiction of Saint Sebastian in the style of Johann Heinrich Roos (1631-1685) presents the martyr bound to a post, his body pierced by arrows that mark his suffering. A radiant halo encircles his head, casting a holy light that distinguishes him from the earthly realm and affirms his sanctity. Rendered with fine, sensitive brushstrokes. Bears signature to the lower right. Beautifully presented in a decorative gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Light discolouration to the varnish. Fine craquelure and abrasions throughout.
