Artist Biography
Gillis van Tilborgh was a Flemish painter active in the 17th century, best known for his genre scenes and group portraits. He was likely born in Brussels around 1625 and worked during the Baroque period. Tilborgh trained within the Flemish artistic tradition and is often associated with the circle of painters influenced by David Teniers the Younger, whose style is reflected in Tilborgh's attention to detail and lively depictions of everyday life. He became a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Brussels in 1654, indicating his professional status as a master painter. His works commonly depict social gatherings, guardroom scenes, and interiors with figures engaged in conversation or leisure activities. These paintings often combine careful composition with a strong sense of realism and narrative. Gillis van Tilborgh likely died around 1678, leaving behind a body of work that contributes to the understanding of Flemish genre painting in the mid-17th century.
