A striking late 19th-century, possibly turn-of-the-century portrait of a lady engaged in needlework, dressed in a purple gown with white collar detailing and her dark hair swept elegantly upwards. The composition is rendered with a distinct Neo-Impressionist technique, employing small, rhythmic marks throughout, particularly evident in the shimmering golden-yellow background that frames the contemplative sitter. The work is well presented behind glass in a muted gilt-effect frame, complete with running patterns. Unsigned. On paper.
Condition
The artwork presents in very good condition for its age. Minor lifting of the pastel noted on areas of the frame's glazing. The frame has minor surface wear consistent with age, including small chips and scuffs. Slightly more loss noted to the upper left and lower left hand corners. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
