Northern European School 1695 Oil - Portrait of a Jesuit Priest
Description
A rare late 17th century religious work portraying a Catholic priest, likely a Jesuit, holding a burning heart inscribed with the Latin word 'Charitas', symbolizing the sitter’s divine mission of service. The figure sits beside a crucifix, meeting the viewer’s gaze with kind eyes and a gentle half-smile, his rosy cheeks and serene expression emblematic of his virtue. His hand held towards his breast and shaped to form what is known as a 'pseudo-zygodactylus' gesture representing a maternal care for mortals and heavenly salvation. This gesture is commonly found in many 16th and 17th century portraits both religious and secular, such as El Greco's portrait of a nobleman held in the Prado Museum, Madrid. Unsigned. Dated 1695. Inscribed in Latin 'Aetatis anno 74', or 'Year of Age 74'. Handsomely presented in a painted black antique frame. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Fine craquelure and abrasions throughout. Ingrained dirt and debris in throughout. The artwork has undergone previous restoration. The canvas has been relined. Areas of overpainting visible under UV light. Overall the artwork remains in good condition for its age. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and indentations. Evidence of historic woodworm damage, however, the frame has been treated and is pest free. Overall the frame is in good condition.
