Description

This beautiful 17th century Flemish garland painting depicts the Virgin Mary encircled by delicate flowers. She holds lilies, symbolizing her purity, whilst surrounding roses evoke her love and sorrow, and cornflowers signify her status as Queen of Heaven. She looks into the distance with wide eyes and rosy cheeks in quiet devotion. Executed in a distinctive Baroque style, the work reflects the tradition of garland paintings popularized by the Flemish master Daniel Seghers (1590-1661). Unsigned. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the varnish, abrasions, paint loss and craquelure throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of restoration. The canvas has been relined. Overall the artwork is in good condition for its age.
