Description

A fine and delicately executed early Victorian portrait of a rosy cheeked child in a white lace dress and blue slipper shoes. There is a bunch of grapes in the child's lap and an upturned basket to the lower left, spilling grapes onto the floor. The child is sat on a grassy mound covered in pansies with a fading sunset landscape behind them. The painting is unsigned and presented in a late 19th Century frame with molded strap work and an internal gilt slip. There is an inscription to the stretchers at the reverse reading "Eliza Morish, Died Sept 1846." This may be information about the child in the painting. On canvas.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of restoration. The stretcher line is visible at the upper edge. There is a 1cm tear to the canvas at the very right edge. There are three canvas repairs at the reverse that have been restored at the front. The frame has general surface scuffing, tarnishing to the gilt and minor losses to the corners.
