Early 20th Century Oil - Sailor Boy

Description

This charming early 20th-century portrait depicts a young boy dressed as a sailor, captured with wide, expressive eyes and rosy cheeks, reminiscent of mid-19th-century portraiture. Beautifully presented in a gilt frame featuring a distinctive wood-effect ground to the inner and a foliate running pattern to the outer edge. The reverse bears a maker’s mark, which is believed not to be authentic. Unsigned. On board.

Condition

Fine craquelure, minor abrasions and light discolouration throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of restoration to the background. Some wear to the frame and oval slip, including fine cracking, scuffs and chips throughout. The frame has been previously restored, including a fill to the upper left. Overall the frame and artwork are in very good condition.
