Description

A romantic Regency-era portrait, likely painted circa 1810-1830. The young woman gazes directly at the viewer, shown in a three-quarter pose, her dark curled hair pinned at the sides in the characteristic Regency fashion. A brooch at her neckline and white fichu suggest a lady of modest but respectable means. The artist has paid particular attention to the soft, luminous treatment of the skin and the sitter's attire, including the loosely draped red shawl, set against an atmospheric landscape backdrop. The painting is housed in an antique gilt frame with floral running patterns and elaborate corner mouldings. Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration and overpainting. The canvas has been previously relined. The frame has various surface wear, including small chips and stable cracking. The frame has a fine patina of age. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.
