17th Century Oil - Duke of Savoy

Description

A striking early 17th-century Spanish School portrait of the Duke of Savoy. The sitter is depicted in fine armour with gilt studwork beneath an elaborate lace ruff. Inscribed "Duq'd Saboia" to the upper edge. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an elaborate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Fine craquelure observed throughout. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. Stretcher marks are visible on the surface of the painting. Small chips and indentations to the frame. Stable cracking to the frame. The canvas has been relined. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.
