An inscription on the reverse of the canvas identifies the sitter of this finely executed nineteenth-century portrait as Victor Adolf Schmedding (1781–1851), a wine merchant. An accompanying portrait (sy287) depicts his wife, Maria Anna Hellweg (1780–1855). The couple married on the 2nd of May 1805 and had nine children together. Well presented in a gilt frame with a lamb's tongue running pattern. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Overall, the condition is good. Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Small areas of overpainting. Faint impressions from the stretchers. Light wear to the frame.
