Description
A large c.1900 oil on canvas portrait of a young peasant woman wearing a red headscarf, blue bodice, and distinctive red and white striped corset over a white blouse. The artist depicts the sitter with an open book, suggesting literacy and contemplation, a common motif that elevated peasant subjects at the time. Housed in its original rococo revival gilt frame with elaborate corner mouldings. The painting is unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Inspection under UV light reveals minor retouching to the lower third of the composition. There is an area to the right side of the canvas showing raised texture and craquelure. Small chips and general light wear to the gilt frame. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
