Description
This remarkable Biedermeier-era portrait depicts Johann Jakob Jung (1779-1847), a German metallurgist and member of parliament. The work was acquired as one of a pair. The accompanying piece depicts his wife Amalia Catharina Jung (née Becker) (1782-1850), and is also listed (sx686). Both are beautifully presented in gilt frames richly embellished with cartouche and scrolling foliate motifs. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and areas of overpainting. Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration and craquelure. Scuffing, stable cracking, and small losses to the frame.
