This remarkable Biedermeier-era portrait depicts Amalia Catharina Jung (née Becker) (1782–1850). The work was acquired as one of a pair. The accompanying piece depicts her husband Johann Jakob Jung (1779–1847), a German metallurgist and member of parliament, and is also listed (sx687). Both are beautifully presented in gilt frames richly embellished with cartouche and scrolling foliate motifs. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and areas of overpainting. Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration and craquelure. Scuffing, stable cracking, and small losses to the frame.
