Description

An elderly woman gazes out a window in this intimate portrait. 'Woman by a window' is an enduring theme in art history with rich symbolism, and has been the subject of paintings by a range of artists, from Vermeer and Caspar David Friedrich to Degas and Cassatt. Here, the window perhaps represents confinement, longing, or loneliness. Signed and dated to the lower left. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame with a beaded running pattern and amber fabric slip. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age including some discolouration and areas of craquelure. The artwork has undergone some previous restoration, including overpainting and relining. Minor marks and scuffs to the frame.

Size

53 x 44cm (20.9" x 17.3")
