Artist Biography

Bertrand PY (1895-1973) was a French artist born in Belfort, France. At a very young age, he showed serious inclinations for drawing and painting. Based in Paris, he pursued fine classical studies, which he later stopped rather abruptly to devote himself exclusively to painting. He entered the National School of Fine Arts by being deceptive about his age. Frequenting galleries such as the Louvre Museum, PY developed his skills by sketching the works of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Velázquez, Chardin, and Delacroix, among others. His work today exhibits this broad spectrum of influence, from the Renaissance to post-impressionism through his unique style of neo-realism. He began exhibiting his work at the age of 25 at the Salon of French Artists and in 1929 became a member of the Salon d’Automne. He also exhibited at the Armant Drouant Gallery, the Simonson Gallery, the Galerie Bernhiem, and the Petit Palais. He held solo shows at the Maison des Artistes and the Bassano Gallery. He died in Paris in 1973.
