Description

A wonderful study of Peel Castle in the Isle of Man. The castle looks out to sea and figures can be seen walking towards to viewer. The fine colour palette and handling of light suggest that this was completed by Mummery. Well presented in a gilt effect frame and white mount. The location is inscribed to the reverse backing card. Beneath the backing card to the reverse of the gouache is the date 1933. Unsigned. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including areas of discolouration and some minor foxing. Most noticeable to the sky. The is some very minor trapped dirt beneath the glazing and minor scuffs to the corners of the frame.

Artist Biography

Horace A. Mummery (1867-1951) was a painter of landscapes largely in watercolour, influenced by Turner and the French Impressionists. The last few years of his life were spent in Cheam, where he lived with his sister Una Constance Tilney and her husband, the Artist Frederick Colin Tilney. Tilney and Mummery were sketching companions who often found inspiration in the countryside around Midhurst in Sussex. Mummery, born at Iver in Buckinghamshire the son of a schoolmaster and Unitarian Minister. Mummery lived in Wood Green for many years and attended Hornsey Art School where he formed a close friendship with the artist Robert G. D. Alexander, a mutual acquaintance being the highly acclaimed watercolourist Hercules B. Brabazon. Horace Mummery came from an artistic family. His brother was the architect John Charles S. Mummery, who was also the President at the Royal Photographic Society. However few of Horace's paintings have appeared in the London salerooms since his death, with the result that today he is a somewhat neglected artist. Mummery was a watercolourist of considerable talent, who exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists ad Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He who would return from trips abroad to France and Belgium with numerous brightly coloured sketches painted rather in the manner of Brabazon but showing more detail. Bruce Castle Museum, Haringey, London have examples of his paintings.
