Description

A fine gouache and watercolour painting by the artist William Carlaw RSW. The scene depicts a seascape with four fishermen handling a large net. The skilful application of colour and precise brush strokes clearly highlight the artist's proficiency in the subject and medium. Signed to the lower left-hand corner. There is an artist's biography inscribed on the reverse. Presented in a washline card mount and in a wooden frame with a gilt detail, as shown. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and slight undulation to the surface. Some marks and foxing to the mount. Scuffing and small losses to the frame.

Artist Biography

William Carlaw RSW (1847-1889) was born in Glasgow in 1847. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and travelled abroad frequently. He is mainly known for his watercolours of marine scenes. Carlaw died in 1889. One of his paintings is hung at the Glasgow Museum/ Art Gallery.
