An impressive watercolour landscape attributed to British painter Edmund Morison Wimperis. The artist's impressionistic style and muted colour palette perfectly captures the picturesque nature of the Sussex landscape. The lines of corn stooks guide the viewer's eye towards the centre of the panoramic composition where the stooks become the focal point. By showing the landscape post-harvest Wimperis presents traditional agricultural methods as aesthetically beautiful. Romanticising harvest, the artist positions traditional farming as integral to the rural aesthetic. The artwork has been monogrammed and inscribed on the reverse by another hand. Therefore although the artwork itself is similar in a style and composition to other artworks by Wimperis we can only attribute the work to him. Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. With light foxing visible to the sky area and mount burn to the edges of the page. There is also discolouration to the mount and losses to the frame which have been retouched.

Artist Biography
Edmund Morison Wimperis was a popular wood-engraver and watercolourist born in 1835. Wimperis began his career working for the publisher Joseph Cundall and for the Illustrated London News. He later became a professional landscape watercolourist and member of the Society of British Artists. In 1874, he joined the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and went on to become one of its foremost members, being elected Vice-President in 1895.
