A very fine monochromatic watercolour, dating to the late 18th or early 19th Century, and attributed to the artist and antiquary Charles Townley FRS (1737-1805). This atmospheric scene depicts a gentleman in 18th Century dress at a writing desk, with a bouillotte lamp. Handsomely presented in a washline mount with gilt detail, as shown in the photographs provided. Unsigned and inscribed. On wove.

Condition

In fine condition. Small loss to the lower left corner behind the mount. Surface dirt and marks on the mount, as shown.

Artist Biography

Charles Townley FRS (1737-1805) was a wealthy English country gentleman, antiquary and collector. He travelled on three Grand Tours to Italy collecting sculpture, and is most remembered for the Townley Marbles that now reside in the Enlightenment Gallery at the British Museum, along with his own bust.
