Alice B. Woodward was born in London the daughter of the Keeper of the Department of Geology at the British Museum. Her early years were spent in Norwich. She studied at the Royal College of Art, Westminster School of Art and at the Académie Julian, Paris studying under the symbolist painter Edmond François Aman-Jean (1858-1936). Woodward also took lessons in illustration from Joseph Pennell and Maurice Greiffenhagen and her connection with Pennell led to commissions from J. M. Dent and Macmillan and Company to illustrate children's books. She also continued to illustrate scientific work throughout her career.
There exists an archive of Alice Woodward's technical illustrations, including striking watercolours of shells, at the Natural History in London. She is perhaps best remembered for her work on the Peter Pan Picture Book in 1907, the first illustrated version of the story of Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. She was a follower and member of the Artists Suffrage League and a member of the Women's Guild of Arts and during World War I Woodward acted as a private tutor to artist Cicely Mary Barker. After working for Naval Intelligence she went to live in Bushey. Here she occupied a studio formerly owned by Hubert Herkomer and where she remained for the rest of her life.
Never a prolific exhibitor she did show early in her career at the Baillie Gallery, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New English Art Club, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in watercolours. In the June 1894 edition of the Studio Magazine, she is recorded as having exhibited at the little-known 91 Art Club located close to her house in Chelsea. Three years later in December 1894, she was given a solo exhibition, comprising mainly works on paper, at the same venue. This little-known art club also exhibited at the Doré Gallery located in New Bond Street, London and at the Clifford Gallery in St. James'. Bushey Museum has a collection of her illustrations.
